Founded by Saint Louis in 1240 to trade with Italy, the Orient and as a point of departure for the Crusades, Aigues-Mortes became the French kingdom's first Mediterranean port. When the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685, the ramparts and towers of Aigues-Mortes were turned into the biggest prison for Protestants. Of this port, there remains today one of the most extraordinary and most well-preserved medieval fortifications in Europe, and from it there is a unique panorama over the Camargue.
